Sarah Pilger: Continued Care

1 of 3

You see Sarah several times over the course of her pregnancy. Sarah and Pat indicate that Sarah is following your recommendations. During the remainder of her pregnancy, Sarah gains weight and ends her full-term pregnancy with a weight gain just slightly below the ideal range for her BMI.

Dr Li's office has forwarded all ultrasound results to you. The fetal ascites disappeared within a month of the initiation of antibiotic therapy. There was never any increase in the very mild ventriculomegaly. The intracranial calcifications remained static, and no new calcifications were seen. The baby's growth improved. The biparietal diameter remained around the 50th percentile for gestational age throughout Sarah's pregnancy, but by delivery the femur length was up to the 20th percentile for gestational age.

During the course of Sarah's care, Sarah and her Mom tell you many tidbit's about Sarah's other healthcare providers.

They tell you that they initially learned Sarah was pregnant when a dentist told her that the type of bump she has on her gums was seen more often in pregnant women.

They tell you about Sarah's favorite nurse in Dr. Li's office and how much they appreciate her help in answering their questions and scheduling her various appointments.

They also tell you about the evaluations planned for the baby after it's birth, the planned physical and occupational therapy.

When you make your presentation to the Family Medicine Faculty and residents, Dr. Li tells you that Sarah's baby, Emily, was born a week after her due date and is responding well to her occupational and physical therapy and is expected to be meeting normal developmental milestones within the next year.

You are impressed by the number of different professions that have been essential to the care of Sarah and her baby.
