Remember, these literature databases attach subjects or tags to each article. It is often helpful to use those subjects instead of your initial search terms.

Look at the subjects in your results.

Do you see a subject that is phrased differently than your search terms?

Is there another term or phrase for bath?

Is there another term or phrase for chlorhexidine?

Is there another term or phrase for surgical site infection?

CINAHL

4 of 5Now that you have identified alternative terms, let's replace your initial search terms with the new subjects.
  • Leave chlorhexidine, as the official subject is the same
  • Erase bath and type in bathing and baths
  • Erase surgical site infection and replace with surgical wound infection

Now that you have adjusted your search statement, click on Search again. Your results are now optimized for your topic.

CINAHL

CINAHL gives you two varieties of full-text options. If you see a PDF Full Text link, you can get the PDF immediately. That is because the library subscribes to some journals through EBSCO, which then seamlessly integrates the files in to the results. If there is not a PDF link, you will see a link labeled Check here for Full Text. Clicking on that link to search the library's other journal collections.
